Animal Care - Curacao
Animal care in Curaçao faces serious challenges. Many dogs and cats are not treated to European standards, and the island struggles with a large population of stray animals. It is a national issue that calls for urgent and coordinated action.
A widespread mentality shift is needed, especially among less-informed residents, to promote responsible pet ownership. Many pets are left unsterilized and unchipped, leading to uncontrolled breeding and neglect. As a result, stray dogs and cats roam freely across the island.
There are growing efforts to address the problem. On a national level, discussions are ongoing about microchipping laws, sterilization campaigns, and catch–neuter–return programs. Animal shelters (asielen) are overwhelmed and underfunded, while passionate private initiatives and rescue organizations work hard to care for, treat, and rehome abandoned animals.
Beyond domestic pets, Curaçao’s wildlife is also under increasing pressure due to economic growth and tourism development. New resorts and apartment complexes are often built in or near natural areas, threatening native species and fragile ecosystems.
Animal care in Curaçao is improving, but lasting change depends on education, legislation, and support for both animal welfare groups and environmental protection.
