Curaçao joins the global City Nature Challenge 2025

Curaçao is once again taking part in the global City Nature Challenge, an annual event that invites people around the world to observe and record local biodiversity using the free iNaturalist app. From April 25 to April 28, 2025, residents and visitors are encouraged to step outside and document as many plant, animal, and fungal species as they can find—whether in backyards, beaches, parks, or urban spaces.

The goal is to raise awareness about local wildlife and contribute valuable data to scientists and conservationists. All observations made in Curaçao during the four-day window will count towards our island’s tally in this friendly global competition. From April 29 to May 5, the identification phase begins, where naturalists and experts from around the world help verify and identify the uploaded findings. In 2024, over 2 million observations were submitted worldwide—this year, Curaçao hopes to break its own record!

Everyone can participate—no special training or background is needed. Simply download the iNaturalist app, create an account, and start taking photos of the nature around you. Whether you’re a biologist, hiker, diver, or just curious about what’s growing in your garden, the City Nature Challenge is a fun and meaningful way to connect with nature and contribute to global biodiversity research.
