Docomomo Curaçao plays an important role in preserving Curaçao’s modern architectural heritage. It is part of the international Docomomo network. This network focuses on documenting and protecting buildings from the Modern Movement. The Curaçao chapter raises awareness about the value of 20th century architecture on the island. It connects research, education, and advocacy. Its goal is to keep these buildings visible and appreciated.
The book Modern Architecture of Curaçao 1930–1960 reflects that mission. It is written by Michael A. Newton with photography by Ton Verkuijlen and graphic design by Carl Arisa. The publication presents 25 buildings that show how modernist ideas were adapted to the Caribbean climate. It includes public buildings, schools, and chapels. Each project combines function with local conditions and design. A special highlight is the Mgr. Verriet Institute by Gerrit Rietveld. It is a unique example of modernism in Curaçao.
The book is not only informative but also visually strong. It combines clear texts with powerful photography and a clean layout. It helps readers understand and appreciate this important period in local architecture. We at Curalink have read the book and we think it’s a pearl in content, photography and layout, great initiative!
